Our History
More than a half-century ago, 10 community leaders formed Douglas County Bank. Since then, generations of families and businesses continue to be loyal bank customers. See our timeline of events as we continue to grow.
- 1952—Douglas County Bank is established in downtown Lawrence as the "Bank of friendly service.” Known as Douglas County State Bank, it is the third bank in Lawrence at that time.
- 1961—The bank moves to its present location at 9th and Kentucky Streets.
- 1964—Douglas County Bank is purchased by its current owner, Ross Beach, a well-known Kansas business leader. This is the only time in its history that the bank has changed hands.
- 1974—The Malls branch (23rd and Louisiana) opens as Lawrence’s first shopping center bank.
- 1980—In response to the rapid growth of West Lawrence, Douglas County Bank opens its third location, the “Orchards” branch at 15th and Kasold.
- 1981—The bank’s name is officially shortened to Douglas County Bank.
- 1989—Always leading the way with innovation, Douglas County Bank opens a branch inside the Brandon Woods retirement community.
- 1992—The bank's current facility is completed at 9th and Kentucky, featuring distinctive architecture and extensive green space.
- 1997—The South Iowa branch (31st and Iowa) opens in response to rapid growth of business in South Lawrence.
- 1999—Truly living up to its name, Douglas County Bank expands its services to other areas of Douglas County with a unique drive-through grocery store branch in Eudora.
- 2001—KU alumnus and 20-year Kansas banker Ted Haggart becomes president of the bank.
- 2002—Douglas County Bank celebrates 50 years of service to the community, making it the oldest existing bank in Lawrence.
- 2003—The West Sixth branch opens at the corner of Sixth Street and Folks Road, bringing our brand of banking to Northwest Lawrence.
